Program
Description:
If you want to develop an understanding of the concepts and
principles that form the foundation of best practices in a
21st century LEAN environment, then these new classes are
for you. They will help you build the knowledge and skill
required to deliver consistently high quality and value-added
products and services to your customers.
In today's highly competitive environment, companies distinguish
themselves through quality, speed of execution and the elimination
of non-value-added activities. They succeed through constant
attention to the bottom line and exceeding customer expectations.
Lean operations provides a means for both.
This 4-course program presents the concepts and tools necessary
for those who will participate in and lead successful lean
initiatives.
Sequence of Courses: Introduction to Lean Operations is the
first class that must be taken. The other 3 classes can be
taken in any sequence, but the recommended sequence is:
·Lean Mapping & 5S
·Process Improvement, Quality and
Scheduling in Lean Operations
·Standard Work, Lean Teams, Lean
Design, and Accounting

Course Descriptions
Introduction to Lean Operations
[27 classroom hours]
This course covers procedures companies can and should use
to identify and eliminate waste throughout the organization.
It provides basic definitions, real-world examples, and an
introduction to such topics as the transparent workplace,
lean product development, Just-in-Time methodologies, lean
process improvement, controlling processes, and continuous
improvement. These tools, techniques and philosophies have
been used worldwide by best-in-class companies to improve
the bottom line, make them more competitive, and drastically
improve their responsiveness to the customer. Introduction
to Lean Operations is the gateway course in the Lean Operations
Certificate Program and should be taken prior to the other
three courses.
Topics:
- Development of the concept of a lean organization and
what benefits it will deliver
- Identification of waste activities and understanding why
they should be eliminated
- How to use flow analysis to analyze a process
- Understanding of the standard lean operations tools: 6S,
visual workplace and visual order control, manufacturing
cells, use of takt time, setup time reduction, standard
worksheets, etc.
- The benefits of incorporating lean concepts during the
development phase of new products
- Error-controlling devices and how they can be used during
the manufacturing process to reduce errors
- Understanding what sigma quality concepts are, introduction
to how to conduct kaizen blitzes, and why continuous improvement
is important to the organization
Lean Mapping and 5S
[27 classroom hours]
This course provides the tools for mapping a value stream.
Here you will learn practical step-by-step methods used in
identifying value streams, developing current state maps,
future state maps, and the action plan that flows out of these.
With the 5S methodology you will find out how to lay down
a foundation for delivering high-quality products and services
in the right quantity, and at the right time, to satisfy your
customer's needs.
Topics:
- Gain an understanding of the types of map used for lean,
along with a general introduction to value-stream mapping
- Learn how to: identify your company's value streams; create
a current state map; develop other useful maps; and analyze
a current state map along with developing a future state
map
- Understand how to develop a framework for lean implementation
using mapping
- Learn about the terms that make up 5S: Sorting, Shine,
Standardize, Sustain, and Set in Order
- Identify what tools are appropriate for auditing and inspecting
in order to maintain the 5S discipline after 5S has been
implemented
Process Improvement, Quality,
and Scheduling in Lean Operations [30 classroom hours]
This course introduces you to the PDCA and DMAIC (six sigma)
frameworks along with the following concepts: kaizen, root
cause problem solving, the visual factory, the seven tools
of quality, and blitz approaches. Also covered are the essential
tools needed for lean scheduling, encompassing descriptions
of building blocks and eight lean scheduling methods including
Kanban, heijunka, and mixed-model production.
Topics:
- Develop an understanding of the symbiotic relationship
between lean and quality
- Learn how to apply some key quality techniques in a lean
context
- Understand how lean and six sigma can work together
- Overview of the central role of scheduling in a lean context
- Understand how a framework for the implementation of a
lean scheduling system is established
- Develop a working knowledge of core lean scheduling techniques
Standard Work, Lean Teams,
Lean Design, and Accounting [27 classroom hours]
This final course in the series documents the steps of implementing
standard work - a tool to determine maximum performance with
minimum waste through the best combination of operator and
machine. Also covered are lean team types, leadership skills,
and anchor draggers. The lean design section covers concurrent
design, value engineering, quality function deployment (QFD),
and failure mode effects analysis (FMEA).
Topics:
- Develop an understanding of the elements and methods of
standard work
- Overview of cellular manufacturing
- Understand how to conduct time observations, process capacity
studies, and team activities related to standard work
- Overview of standard work documents and how they are prepared
- Develop an understanding of the role teams, measurements,
and design have in contributing to success in lean implementation
- A review of relevant current theories on teams, accounting,
and design as they relate to lean
Note: All textbooks will be provided to the student at the
first class session. The cost of the textbooks is included
in the cost of the individual course tuition.
